Why Are You Painting?
Jan Dickey, Reem Bassous and Alina Kawai of Painters Club are proud to present a Virtual Exhibition for the Honolulu Museum of Art and an accompanying limited-edition catalogue. This is a survey exhibition, comprised of work and words coming from twenty-one painters hailing from states on three far-flung coasts of the USA: Hawaiʻi, California, and New York. Each painter was sent a survey that asked six questions designed to uncover the reason why they paint. Those surveys, combined with personal observations made during studio visits by the curators, were used to construct statements that now accompany each artist’s work. By working closely with the painters, the Painters Club strove to uncover and communicate authentic, personal, and inspirational answers to the big question: WHY ARE YOU PAINTING?
